So, you've decided that you want to join our insane little group on IRC? Or, has the Java Chat client has pissed you off for the last time?

Yes, it does suck. That's why most of us in the channel don't use it, except when we're not at home using our own computers. Or when we're on a computer with an IRC client installed.

Instead of making you suffer through the stupidity of the Java Chat, Kala's decided to write a tutorial to help people get over the phobia of using mIRC to connect to our channel. It's actually quite easy! :P

  1. Download the mIRC installer program, either from http://mirc.com/.
  2. Duh, find where you saved the program and install it.
  3. Once the install is finished, RUN mIRC.
  4. You should be looking at something resembling this:

    See the second button from the left? That's your Options menu. Click that, and this menu should pop up:

    Fill in the information as shown. Try to pick a nickname that NO ONE ELSE HAS! If it's something like an anime name, chances are it's already been used! >.<;
  5. Click the little sun button (the one right next to "Connect to Server") to pop up the menu where we'll input the server information:

    Click "Add", and fill out the new window that pops up as shown in the next image:

    Click "Add", then go to the "Options" sub-category under "Connect." Click on the button that says "Perform..." and put in this command:

    Click "OK" to close out this window, then click it again to get out of the options menu.
  6. Referring back to the top image, do you see the lightning bolt button (the first button on the left)? Click that, and you'll connect to the chatroom, so you should be seeing something like this:

    Type at the skinny bottom area as you would in AIM or something, and hit enter to send it. :D

    Here's a small list of IRC commands that you can use:

    Command Action
    /me youractionhere Send an action out to the channel, like this:

    * RobinSena whistles
    /join #channel Join a channel with the name CHANNEL.
    /part #channel Leave a channel named CHANNEL
    /quit whatevermessageyouwanthere Quits IRC, with your message.
    /exit Completely closes out mIRC.
    /NickServ register urpasswerd your@ema.il Register your unique nickname, so no one can steal it from you! You will be e-mailed by NickServ an authorization code. Just copy paste the command they send you into mIRC and hit Enter. :D

    If you do register your name, PLEASE USE YOUR REAL E-MAIL! Or else, you won't get the authorization code! :|| Also, your password IS case-sensitive!
    /NickServ identify urpasswerd Tells NickServ that you are the owner of the nickname. You probably want to put this command in step 5 once you register your nickname with the "/join #stnj" thing you typed in there before, so you will automatically identify for your nickname when you connect. Be careful!

    Those are most of the basic IRC commands that you need to know. If you still need help, feel free to ask someone in chat, or email Kala: orbo at vauss dot com.
